The space inside space
What if there is a space, hidden in mathematic formulaes, that is there not to be created, but to be discovered?
Can you get lost in that space?
It started with some images, and then animations, rendered using Mandelbulber, a raymarching software for 3D-fractals. Looking at those amazing virtual landscapes, a question came to mind:
Am I creating this, or has it always been there, and I am merely exploring it?
The logical next step was a short story, written in the style of the great H. P. Lovecraft, that dwells further on this subject.
And then, of course, some music.
I wanted to recreate the feeling of the fractal realm by using randomness, LFOs and other generative technologies. The sound itself should include noise drones, field recordings and very long reverbs, to give a sense of alien vastness. And, to tie it to the story, some statements of the main protagonist regarding his discoveries.
So far, several sets have been build, with maybe some more to come.
Visualisations that do the idea justice are, unfortunately, difficult to make. Not so much the generation of amazing imagery itself, but to have animations longer than a few minutes. The whole rendering process is extremely expensive, easily taking several hours per minute video, even on a decently specced rig. At least, if you want good quality.
